By admin / June 8, 2020

Creating the right bedroom lighting takes more effort than one might think. Sure, you might be able to throw some lamps on your nightstands and install a light in the ceiling fan, but does this create the mood you’re looking for?

If you want your bedroom to have inviting lighting that’s relaxing and soothing, then you’ll want to learn a few bedroom lighting tips and ideas. You can do more with lighting than most know, and your options are endless!

From natural lighting to task lighting, and everything in between, it’s time to learn about all of the different ways to use lighting in the bedroom to create the space you want and need. Continue reading below for everything you need to know!

Completing Tasks

Sure, your bedroom is the place where you end your day. It’s the room that allows you to finally wind down and relax, but that’s not to say you don’t enjoy reading a good book or completing a word puzzle in your pj’s right before closing your eyes. Many people enjoy reading, writing, and so on while laying in bed.

To do all of these things, however, you’re going to need good task lighting. Tasks lights are layered on top of your normal bedroom lighting. They aren’t to be used for general lighting in the room but for more focused lighting instead.

Table lamps work well for task lighting, but this isn’t your only option. You can hang pendant lighting from either side of the bed, install lights on either side of the headboard, or even install lights on the walls on either side of the bed that point downwards.

Make sure they provide enough light for you to focus on small tasks, and you’re good to go.

Highlighting Focal Points

If you have something in your bedroom that acts as a focal point, then you can install lighting that highlights this focal point. Accent lighting works well for bringing attention to the artwork in a room. Do you have a beautiful painting hanging on your wall off to the side of your bed?

Is there a sculpture or statue on a side table near the bed? Use accent lighting to highlight any of these pieces. Rope lights are another great way to highlight the entire room.

You can hang the rope lights around the room at the edges of the ceiling. The effect is the entire bedroom becomes the focal point.

Dimming the Brightness

Having light dimmers in the bedroom is essential. If you only have one brightness setting to choose from, then you won’t be able to use your bedroom to its full potential. Imagine waking up in the morning and being able to turn the lights on with a dimmed effect.

No one wants to open their eyes first thing in the morning and be blinded. Start your morning with a dimmed light and then turn it brighter as you become more awake. The same is true for at night.

When you’re ready to start settling down in bed but still need the lights on, you can dim them to help prepare you to relax and eventually fall asleep.

Opening the Sky

You should incorporate all different types of lights in your bedroom, and this includes natural lighting as well. Use blinds on your windows that open fully, allowing as much light in as possible. You can hang blackout curtains to ensure all light stays out when you’re not ready to wake up yet, but then have the blinds fully open when it’s time to rise and shine.

Letting the light in through your windows isn’t the only way to soak in all of the natural light. You should also consider roof skylight installation. Roof skylights let in plenty of natural light from above.

Not only are they beautiful to look at during the day, but they’re amazing to look through during the evening hours as well. Imagine lying down at the end of the day and gazing up at the night sky right from your bed! Stargazing is one of the best ways to unwind at the end of a long day and slowly fall to sleep.

Selecting Bulb Colors

The type of lighting and where you place the lights are important but so is the type of bulb you use in the light fixture. Bulbs come in different brightness levels and different colors. Using the wrong color bulb or wrong brightness could negatively affect the way your bedroom functions.

Your first step is to think about the type of ambiance you want to create in your bedroom, this will help you decide how bright you want the lightbulbs to be. Remember to find dimmable bulbs if you want this feature.

Bulbs that give off white or blue light are ideal for your task lighting, but you won’t want to use them for your overall bedroom lighting. Yellow bulbs work best for when you’re trying to relax and eventually fall to sleep. Keep this in mind when lightbulb shopping and be sure to use the right colors for specific functions.
