The Not-So-Perfect Kitchen: Avoiding Common Design Mistakes

By admin / June 5, 2019

It is the social hub of the home, whilst also happening to be one of the most expensive rooms to remodel. Despite this, the kitchen is subject to some classic design mistakes which really hinder its effectiveness.

This is what today’s article is going to hone in on. If you are contemplating a new kitchen design, make sure you steer clear of the following mistakes which can wreak havoc with the functionality and look of this room.

Mistake #1 – You pledge all of your money into appliances

There’s no doubt that kitchen appliances have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years. Once upon a time they sapped the energy out of the home – whilst looking pretty ugly at the same time. Now, they are completely energy efficient, and manufacturers have realised the importance of design aesthetics.

However, they are expensive and if you are contemplating a rework of your room, they are by no means essential. Sometimes, Service Force Zanussi appliance repairs are sufficient and will bring your appliance up to scratch, whilst freeing up money to spend on the things that can really make a difference in this room.

Mistake #2 – You don’t think about the work triangle

If there is one rule that has survived the test of time when it comes to the kitchen, it is the work triangle. In short, this refers to the theory that the oven, sink and refrigerator all need to be in a triangle. The benefit of this is that working in the kitchen becomes a lot more efficient, as nothing should come in-between them.

Even if you are opting for a hugely modern design, make sure this remains a core principle.

Mistake #3 – You go overboard with islands

In some cases, kitchen islands are fantastic. In others, they are a nightmare.

Remember we just spoke about the kitchen triangle? Well, the kitchen island is something which can commonly prove problematic in this regard.

In the quest to get an island, a lot of them are made without thought. They might be too small, meaning that they don’t serve any real purpose, or too large which means they consume far too much space in the room.

To get started, ask yourself if your kitchen really is suitable for an island. If it isn’t, move on quickly.

Mistake #4 – Not thinking about storage

You might have the perfectly sized kitchen island, whilst also ensuring that you have a triangle linking up the main points of the room.

Unfortunately, everything becomes unravelled when it comes to storage. Like it or not, all kitchens need them, but an increasing number of homeowners completely forget about it.

You need storage to at least house pans, plates, utensils and anything else you can think of. Without it, the whole room will become one, big clutter – and this will ruin any kitchen design.

You might have to think outside the box in smaller spaces, but start by listing everything you will store here and work backwards.
